Dumbledore's Death

Editorial written by Reggie

Since the beginning of the series, along with Harry Potterr, Dumbledore had been a marked man to die. From Voldermorth perspective, he was yet another barrier when achieving his ultimate goal: killing Harry Potter. In many ways, there were a couple of different steps in doing this. The first was understanding why he was unable to touch the boy, that was his mothers love. Once Voldermorth broke that bond in The Goblet of Fire there was nothing stopping him.

Which leads me to my next point. What's the deal with Dumbledore's death? My copy of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince still holds the Kleenex that I used when I read this. Was I out of this world suddenly surprised that JK did this? Not at all! But the way she went about this leaves my draw hanging open. I had already assumed that Dumbeldore's death would be very signficiant and set off a chain of events. The fact that it came at the end of Book 6, was enough of a surprise for me. I had previously thought that this would occur in Book 7 or at least that the poweful all-knowing Dumbledore would die to make some great sacrafie. But thinking like JK, it makes sense to kill off Dumbledore. She has left Harry with no one. No parents, no godfather Sirius, and not his surrogant grandfather Dumbledore. There is no one for Harry to turn to, thus leaving Harry to solve his problems - kiling Voldermorth - on his own.

So Harry and Dumbledore are in the top tower where they see the Dark Mark, Harry in under his invisible cloak. The door burst open and next thing he knows, he can't move.

He could not understand how it happened -- Expelliarmus was not a Freezing Charm -- Then, by the light of the Mark, he saw Dumbledore's wand flying in an arc over the edge of the ramparts and understood... Dumbledore had wordlessly immobilzed Harry, and the second he had taken to perform this spell had cost him the chance of defending himself. (HBP p. 585)

It's important to note that Dumbledore froze Harry using hte Expelliarmus Charm, which as we all know, is a spell that causes an opponent's weapon to fly out of their hand. So how did Dumbledore somehow use this spell to freeze Harry? The more important question is why did he do this? My guess is as good as yours but I think that Dumbledore had this planned. Since Book 1, Dumbledore has been painted as his all-knowing wizard that knows things, even before has time to explain it to him. The fact that he acted and froze Harry so quickly when Draco burst into the room might show that he knew this was going to happen, I'm not sure.

I would have hoped that the very powerful Dumbledore would have had a more appropiate death. If he died in combat, fighting them and they pulled a trick and killed him. But the great Dumbeldore, begging? Is this seriously how a very powerful wizard like Dumbledore would have died? This urked me very much. It's very clear the Dumbeldore would die so that Harry would face his problems alone. But there were some issues surrounding it that completly stumped me.
